OLD AND NEW

THE OLD WITHIN THE NEW IN “HUGO”

HUGO
MARTIN SCORSESE
2011

If you are a visitor to this blog you are a film fan and you have no doubt already beaten a quick path to “Hugo” and don’t need my recommendation. Here goes anyway. The camera, the sets and the splendid light create a world. Faithful to the novel, Scorsese retains the image of Prometheus stealing fire (light) for mortals so they can make movies. Right!

And we have movies within the movie. It is not every afternoon that you see Buster, Charlie, Doug and even one frame of Rudy (as in Valentino) within a single film. The mockups of the Melies films (sorry, my keyboard doesn’t yet have accents) are fun and are superb, chorines included.

All the acting is outstanding. Ben Kingsley is terrific and Jude Law perfect.

“Hugo” is at least a half hour too long, but the magic holds. This is one special film and especially special for us buffs.
