My category for this post might better be “Entertainment Weekly Bizarros.”  EW is the most savvy and literary of our popular magazines that treat film,  treating it  —   alas!  —   less and less, but still boasting two of the world’s best critics, Owen Gleiberman and Lisa Schwarzbaum.  Yet EW continues to encourage the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in its strangest games.  In the November 18 issue this amounts to touting Kenneth Branaugh, Christopher Plummer and Max von Sydow for supporting actor Oscar nominations.  These are not supporting actors.  They are superstars.  Giants.  Novae.  Like former winners Gene Hackman, Michael Caine and Ingrid Bergman.  Look for more on this topic in a future post as the awards season steamrolls towards us.
